Supporting Documents – Buyback
Post
When you apply for a buyback, NYCERS must verify both your earnings and service history for the period(s) of time you want to purchase. Generally, NYCERS is able to obtain your pay and service records if the service you are purchasing was with the agencies listed below and within the specified timeframe:
- Mayoral Agencies – Starting from February 1986
- NYC Health + Hospitals – Starting from 1973 (1983 and 1986 are incomplete)
- Transit Authority – Starting from 1986 (1987 and 1988 are incomplete for certain titles)
- Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority (TBTA), Department of Education (DOE), CUNY 4-year colleges – Most records can be obtained by NYCERS
In situations where NYCERS is unable to obtain the documents needed to verify your service and pay history (i.e., you worked for New York State, or the service you are purchasing falls outside of the timeframes mentioned above, etc.), you are responsible for providing NYCERS with the following supporting documents:
Earnings Verification
- W-2s; OR
- Detailed Social Security earnings report that includes the employer information (Note: The annual report is not acceptable because it does not include employer information); OR
- Computer printout of payroll earnings or payroll earnings report.
Service Verification
- Roster card; OR
- Employment history provided by your employer.
There Are Three Ways to Provide Your Supporting Documents
- Online – The MyNYCERS Buyback application allows you to upload and submit your supporting documents along with your buyback application. This step is optional so if you submit your buyback application without supporting documentation, you can log in to your account anytime and click Upload a Form or Document.
- Mail - Send to 30-30 47th Avenue, 10th Floor Long Island City, NY 11101. Make sure to write your first and last name, and member number on each page you send.
- Walk-in Center – Drop off your documents on the Mezzanine Level of 340 Jay Street in downtown Brooklyn, Monday – Friday between 8 am and 5 pm.
