Public Retirement Systems in New York City and New York State

Post

There are eight public retirement systems in New York City and New York State.

  • New York City Employees’ Retirement System (NYCERS)
  • New York City Teachers’ Retirement System (NYCTRS)
  • New York City Police Pension Fund
  • New York City Fire Department Pension Fund
  • New York City Board of Education Retirement System (BERS)
  • New York State and Local Employees’ Retirement System (NYSLRS)
  • New York State and Local Police and Fire Retirement System
  • New York State Teachers’ Retirement System (NYSTRS)

Your eligibility to join any one of these retirement systems depends on which New York City or New York State Agency you are employed by.

If you are a new employee who is eligible for NYCERS Membership, you can learn about the benefits of NYCERS membership and complete your membership application by visiting nycers.org/join.

If you change agencies and are no longer eligible for membership in your current retirement system, you may be eligible to transfer your membership to a different retirement system within New York City or New York State. Learn more about Transfers.

If you terminated a prior membership with any of the above retirement systems and are returning to public service for a New York City Agency in a position eligible for NYCERS Membership, you may qualify for Tier/Membership Reinstatement. Learn more about Tier/Membership Reinstatement.
